4. To enlarge the pool of black candidate attorneys from which
professional appointments can be made within the Group and

5. In order to increase the number of black professionals in the
Group and at each firm, and so increase the number of black meet and exceed

6. 20% of all legal services outsourced by a firm to legal service
providers must be outsourced to black law firms (at least 25%
black owned) and/or black advocates or other legal service
providers that are at least 25% black-owned.
7. A firm must have a functioning pro bono programme that at a
minimum meets the requirements of the relevant Law Society
requirements for pro bono work.
The Group BEE standards represent the minimum requirements which
each member firm must meet. Firms are encouraged to exceed
these minimum standards and proactively plan for higher levels
of compliance, particularly in the light of the increasing pressures
described earlier in this report on law firms to achieve higher BEE
levels. Further aspects being considered for inclusion on the review of
these standards relate to the Group value of caring, which demands
an increasing focus also on corporate social responsibility and
environmental accountability.
